Scuba Diving the Maldives
After my winter at pole, I took the long way home, with stops in Singapore, the Maldives, Portugal, and the Azores. The longest of those was over a week of scuba diving in the Maldives. Loads of great dives with lots of sharks and manta rays.
Winter at the South Pole
The 2025 austral winter at the Amundsen-Scott South Pole Station marked the 69th winter season of continuous operations, and yet less 2000 people have been at pole in the winter. I spent just shy of a year there, arriving in December 2024 and departing in November 2025. Pole typically has ~150 people at any given time in the summer, with multiple flights most weeks. However come February, temperatures start to drop to the point where LC-130s can no longer support us. When the last flight leaves, a skeleton crew of ~40 (42 my winter) stay behind to keep the station afloat until late October. We become the most isolated humans there are - even the astronauts in the ISS are more connected to civilization with 24/7 internet and the ability to return to earth in an emergency. For over 8 months, we are alone. No more fresh food coming in, no way home even if you fall ill. Once the single sunset of the year occurs in March, we enter our 6 month long polar night, where temperatures can hit an ambient -100F.
